中国人

The 中国人 program prepares students to communicate and interact in 中国人-speaking cultures and communities, and focuses on geographic and 文化 awareness as well as language learning. W&J students who minor in 中国人 can expect to reach the intermediate or advanced level in Mandarin by their junior year, and must take at least one advanced-level language course to graduate. In combination with other disciplines, 知识 of the world’s most-spoken language opens myriad opportunities for our students.

The mission of the Department of 世界语言 & 文化 is to impart to all W&J students the skills, 知识, and qualities necessary to communicate and interact in 文化ly appropriate ways with speakers of languages other than their own. The Department of 世界语言 & 文化 delivers the social, 文化, 发展, 专业, and personal benefits of language learning and is, 因此, a key component of W&J's liberal arts curriculum. Through the study of languages, literatures, and cultures of the world, W&J students develop the linguistic and 文化 competencies that are essential to becoming active and compassionate global citizens.

Beyond the Classroom

The Department of Modern Languages offers numerous opportunities for students in language programs to 出国留学, building on what they learn in the classroom with a greater understanding of and appreciation for the way speakers use the language in their daily lives.

Students can spend a semester in the 中国人 cities of Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Qingdao. They also can take advantage of summer Magellan projects in China, or apply to the Fulbright program to teach in Taiwan. 最后, there are opportunities to conduct field research in China paid for by the 4-year implementation of a Luce Foundation grant.
